Purchased tomato plants (Bonnie Roma Paste, Early Girl and Husky Cherry) from Lowe’s and Walmart.
The Walmart ones are on the back deck. The Lowe’s are on the front deck.
Walmart’s were purchased with grocery order on May 25. Size 19.3 oz., about 1 pint each. Purchased 2 Bonnie Roma Classic paste at $4.68 each and 2 Bonnie Husky Cherry at $4.68 each. Hardened off on back deck for about a week then planted in three tall trash cans on the back deck.
Lowe’s tomato plants was purchased May 16. Probably quart in size, approximately $19 each. One Husky Cherry and one Early Girl. Both had green tomatoes on them, Early Girl had one tomato that ripened and eaten June 3. The Early Girl was a bright red, med size tomato with a nice texture and taste.
May 25th: Purchased the four Walmart tomato plants. Hardened off for two days on back porch.
May 27th: Planted the four Walmart tomato plants into 3 tall trash cans on back deck. Planted 6-inches below rim so trash can rim would protect from high winds for week or so.
June 4th: The four tomato plants are well on they way of growing above the trash can rim. Planted two Sunny sunflowers into each of the 3 tall trash cans. Planted sunflower transplants deep so about 1-3 inches between first sunflower leaves and dirt. Light covering of mulch on dirt top.
June 4th: Roma tomato plant is putting out fruit buds, also known as flowers, as part of their natural reproductive process. These yellow, star-shaped flowers will eventually turn into fruit if they are properly pollinated. The plant itself decides which flowers will develop into fruit and which will be discarded.
June ?: Add next dirt layer and light mulch layer (as sunflowers and tomato plants grow).
These four (the middle tall black trash can has 2 Roma plants) were planted May 27. Bottom half is freshly purchased (2025) garden dirt from Miracle Grow. This is a heavy, dense dirt that works out well if blended with a lighter media, such as the moss that bulbs and corms from Breck’s are packed in. I lightly spread Dr. Earth Organic 5 Tomato, Vegetable & Herb Fertilizer and blended into the top dirt of the bottom half of heavy dirt. Blending of transporting media and the heavy dirt turned out nice for the top dirt layer that is placed around the tomato plants.
See remarks within Sunflowers webpage for my deep burying two Sunny sunflowers into each of the 3 tall trash cans.
