Backyard, Garden 9 Hollyhocks:
After first blooming: Trim stalks down to about 2 feet. Remove flower heads and any leaves with rust or other damage (can remove all leaves). These stripped-down stalks will rebloom with healthy leaves. Let these blooms go to seed. When they seed, then cast sow purchased seeds.
Garden 9: Three year growth of hollyhocks in 150 gallon tank with reseeded bright yellow coreopsis grandiflora.

Seed Germination: Hollyhock seeds can be tricky to germinate, requiring a cold stratification period before they will sprout. A 2-week cold stratification period chilling in the refrigerator.

Sowing: Hollyhock seeds prefer some light to germinate, so surface sowing is the way to get better results. Soaking seeds in warm water for 12 hours can help soften the tough seed coat and potentially improve germination rates before casting on bare soil. Gently press Hollyhock seeds into well-draining soil, keep soil consistently damp until germination.

Sunflowers typically germinate best when soil temperatures are between 50°F and 55°F, with some varieties germinating even better at slightly warmer temperatures, around 70°F to 85°F. However, a soil temperature of at least 60°F is generally recommended as a minimum for planting.
