Each year I like to surf eBay and purchase a give-to-myself gift for Christmas. I have two criterias: under $15 and that the design includes something new to try. Last summer I came upon several net darning kits. The embroidery style looked neat, and as I had not work this style of embroidery before I quickly made the purchase of Snowflake Village and the Winter Reindeer. Here it is a year later and three weeks ago, looking through my stash, I rediscovered the two purchased net darning kits. I started working Winter Snowflake in hand but began to worry that it would not turn out “square” so I tacked the 6 count net canvas onto a wood stretcher bar frame that was smaller than the needed size but it worked out Ok. I found this style of embroidery so enjoyable that I surfed eBay again two weeks ago and purchased the net darning kit The Three Magi.
I like the cream on cream color of the kits but when working my second (the Reindeer) kit I found wood stain from the knobs had colored some of the cream color threads of the Reindeer kit. But heck, these kits were put together in 1988 so I am lucky that is the only discoloring within the materials. Stealing thread from the set-aside Three Magi kit so I could finish the Reindeer one I knew that I would not have enough kit provided thread for the Three Magi design. As I have a nice stash of size 5 DMC and Anchor on hand I have decided to work the Three Magi in color threads. But that has to wait as I have already started a Tanja Berlin long/short flower design and I want to start work on an ebay purchased vintage crewel kit and finish it as a small toss pillow.
As normal for me I changed parts of the design, the main difference is that I make both the Snowflake Village and Winter Reindeer to be just about the same size as I plan to hang them near each other in our hallway.
